The Castle of Gabiano, one of the oldest and most impressive of Monferrato, is mentioned in historical sources as early as the eighth century. It is located in a spectacular panoramic position, from which it dominates the Po valley. It is also a place of great historical importance. In fact, here William II, Marquis of Monferrato, received the noble investiture from the Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in 1164.
Subsequently, there was a long scenario of sieges and wars. In fact, it passed first into the hands of the Gonzagas and finally to Agostino Durazzo Pallavicini, the first Marquis of Gabiano. Do not miss the curious labyrinth, one of the rarest still visible in Piedmont, surrounded by the Estate Park.
The Marquises Cattaneo Adorno Giustiniani, current owners of the manor, have been engaged for over four centuries in the production of high quality wines, with a company that extends over the territory of Gabiano for 260 hectares, of which 22 are cultivated in vineyards.
Today Giacomo Cattaneo Adorno, the last Marquis of Gabiano and his wife Emanuela carry on with passion and determination the wine tradition of Casato, updated with the enlightened enology technology, but without forgetting the deep connection with the origins and the territory.
The castle of Gabiano is included in the itinerary “The hills of Monferrato: a journey to discover the places of Faith“.
