The Sacro Monte (Sacred Mountain) of Serralunga of Crea is located on one of the highest hills of Monferrato, about 400 meters above sea level. It was the king of Italy Arduino, at the beginning of the eleventh century, to want the foundation of a first sanctuary, dedicated to the Assumption, then expanded and enriched in decoration between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The interior preserves real masterpieces of art, including a splendid cycle of frescoes depicting the Stories of Santa Margherita, dating back to the fifteenth century. Near the Sanctuary, here is the Sacro Monte, built in 1589; on the devotional path there are 23 chapels and 5 hermitages, in which the Mysteries of the Rosary are narrated, with spectacular frescos and sculptures of real dimensions. At the peak of the path, the panoramic Chapel of Paradise awaits you, with a great scenic effect, animated by about 500 carved figures.
The visit to the Sacred Mountain of Crea is included into “Monferrato’s literature and myth through Cesare Pavese masterpieces” and “The hills of Monferrato: a journey to discover the places of Faith” and also “Biking in Monferrato: from the Po river to the Sacred Mountain of Crea” experiences.
